Relationships as a Teacher Recruiting Tool (w. Peira M.) [7FMS Ep. #129]

by Daniel Patterson

In March of this year, I took part of the Grow team to Brooklyn New York to do some in person planning for the podcast.

I spent a considerable amount of time at Brooklyn Music Factory’s gorgeous studio space.

While there, I had a “stop and chat” with Peira (BMF’s co-owner).

In the course of that conversation, she made some interesting comments about her hiring strategy for Brooklyn Music Factory.

I asked her so many questions and spent a good 15 minutes just picking her brain about how they find great talent to staff their seasonal programs (as well as their year-round programs).

During the conversation, I said: “Man! I wish we had a camera crew here… this whole conversation should just be an episode of the podcast!”

We didn’t record that conversation, but we did the next best thing… We set up a time to talk about it again and elaborate even further on the topic.

Today’s episode is that conversation… click below to listen!

Or, check out the video version of the podcast:

Here’s what we cover in the episode:

  • Relationship building as a recruitment strategy
  • Recruiting managers and teachers for your music school
  • Hiring positions for camp: extended day manager
  • Transitioning seasonal hires to long-term teachers (and even directors)
  • When to start hiring and how to be prepared + what positions to hire first
  • What to include in your job descriptions
  • How do you find good candidates?
  • Recruiting as a project vs. an ongoing process
  • The top 2 places to source your applicants
  • Using Indeed for hiring (features + more)
  • A seasoned music school director’s strategies for more effective networking and recruiting
  • Sending a rejection email to applicants who don’t work out

We’re getting closer to fall… which means the fall rush is right around the corner.

Are you ready for the rush?

If not… check out this free training on how to get more students every single week.

Also… Daniel has been posting a lot of great advice on his Instagram.

Now’s the time of year to consider what programs you are going to be offering in your music studio this fall…
And if you are looking for a program that will:

  • Increase student retention…
  • Increase the number of your beginners that become intermediate students
  • Help students go through their books faster (Proven! We did a study on this!)…
  • Increase home practice time (Proven! We have years of data showing that this happens)
  • And increase the profit in your studio (not just revenue)…

… Then you need to head over to GroupLessons.com, sign up for a free demo, and we’ll show you how hundreds of studios have easily started a new group program (sometimes in just a few weeks)… with little to no difficulty.

You can even begin our owner training for free (download our shopping list, and look through our teacher guides and method).
